Marine Engineering
The National Diploma in Technology Course in Marine Engineering was commenced in 1978 with
the assistance of UNESCO, and the inputs from UESCO included the services of consultants,
equipment and training for local staff. The course curriculum was originally formulated to satisfy
the requirements of the Department of Transport (United Kingdom) which has recognised the course
as an approved pre-sea training course. Further, the facility was made available for the Department of
Transport (U.K.) on completion of the second year examination of the Diploma Course. The University
of Moratuwa holds this examination once a year and the answer scripts are assessed in UK.
Subject syllabi have been amended at different times and they now also satisfy International
Maritime Organization, STCW-78 Convention, academic requirements for Officer-in-Charge of
an Engine Room Watch
